Adekunle Gold, born Adekunle Almoruf Kosoko on 28 January 1987, hails from Lagos, Nigeria, where he belongs to the Kosoko royal family and even holds the title of prince. He earned an HND in Arts and Design from Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH). Though he initially worked as a graphic designer — even creating album covers for Olamide’s YBNL label — his love for music had been growing since childhood, rooted in his early days singing in the church choir.
Adekunle’s musical journey burst into the limelight with the release of his debut solo single “Sade” in December 2014 — a highlife-styled cover of One Direction’s “Story of My Life,” sung in Yoruba and English. The song became a breakout hit and earned him the Headies Award for Best Alternative Song in 2015. Soon after, Olamide signed him to YBNL Nation, which propelled Adekunle deeper into the music industry.
In 2016, he released his debut album Gold, a finely crafted blend of Afro-soul, neo-soul, Afropop, folk, and highlife. The album reached number seven on Billboard’s World Albums chart and produced fan favourites such as “Orente.” His follow-up album About 30 arrived in 2018 and also charted internationally.
By 2020, Adekunle had reinvented his sound with Afro Pop Vol. 1, an experimental mix of Afro-pop, Afrobeats, and highlife that included collaborations with artists like Nailah Blackman and Patoranking. In 2022, he released Catch Me If You Can, leaning into a more contemporary Afropop sound with global appeal.
In 2023, Adekunle Gold reached a new milestone by signing with Def Jam Recordings and releasing his fifth studio album, Tequila Ever After. This project featured international stars like Pharrell Williams, Khalid, and Labrinth, blending Afrobeats, highlife, amapiano, and pop into a global sound. Its lead single “Party No Dey Stop” became a hit and was listed among Rolling Stone’s top Afropop songs of 2023.
Beyond music, Adekunle has also expanded his creativity into storytelling, co-producing The Odyssey, a documentary tracing 100 years of Yoruba music history. This step shows his commitment not just to entertainment but to preserving and celebrating culture.
