Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, professionally known simply as Shakira, was born on February 2, 1977, in Barranquilla, Colombia. Widely regarded as the “Queen of Latin Music,” she is celebrated for her unique blend of Latin, Arabic, and rock influences, her instantly recognizable voice, and her incredible belly-dancing ability that has become a signature part of her performances.

Shakira’s love for music began early in her childhood, as she wrote her first poem at the age of four and received her first guitar by age eight. By the time she was thirteen, she had signed her first record deal. Her first albums, “Magia” (1990) and “Peligro” (1993), showcased her early talent but it was her third studio album, “Pies Descalzos” (1995), that made her a breakout star across Latin America. Her follow-up album, “¿Dónde Están los Ladrones?” (1998), solidified her position as one of the most promising Latin artists of her generation.

Her crossover into the English-speaking market came with the release of “Laundry Service” (2001), which featured global hits such as “Whenever, Wherever” and “Underneath Your Clothes.” The album’s success marked the beginning of her reign as a global pop superstar. Over the years, Shakira has continued to release critically acclaimed and commercially successful albums such as “Oral Fixation,” “Sale el Sol,” and “El Dorado,” blending pop, rock, reggaeton, and dance music in a way that appeals to a worldwide audience.

Shakira has won numerous accolades, including three Grammy Awards, twelve Latin Grammy Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and MTV Video Music Awards. Her 2010 hit “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” became the official song of the FIFA World Cup, further cementing her status as a global icon.

Aside from music, Shakira is an entrepreneur, philanthropist, and activist. She founded the Barefoot Foundation (Fundación Pies Descalzos), which provides education and nutrition to underprivileged children in Colombia. Her humanitarian efforts have earned her recognition from the United Nations and other international bodies.

Musically, Shakira is known for her powerful contralto voice, poetic lyricism, and distinctive stage presence. Her performances often feature elements of belly dance inspired by her Lebanese heritage, mixed with modern choreography.

Shakira’s personal life has also been in the spotlight, notably her long-term relationship with Spanish footballer Gerard Piqué, with whom she has two children. Even after her high-profile split, Shakira continues to inspire fans with her resilience and ability to turn personal struggles into empowering music.

Today, Shakira remains one of the best-selling Latin artists of all time and continues to influence new generations with her artistry, cultural fusion, and advocacy for education and equality.
